Powertrain Fasteners

Overview

This page documents all fasteners (bolts, nuts, washers) used in the powertrain assembly. Each fastener is identified by location, size, and purpose with reference photos showing exact positions.

Critical Safety

Proper torque specifications must be followed. Loose motor mounts or sprocket bolts can cause catastrophic failure.

Motor Mounting Hardware

Motor to Chassis Mount

  • Location: Motor mount bracket to chassis
  • Fasteners: 4x M8x30 hex head cap screws with M8 nuts
  • Torque: 25 Nm
  • Notes: Use threadlocker on bolts. Check tension after first 10 hours of operation.

Transmission Hardware

Front Sprocket (Motor Shaft)

  • Location: Custom sprocket to motor shaft
  • Fasteners: 3x M6x16 hex head cap screws
  • Torque: 12 Nm
  • Notes: Evenly spaced around sprocket. Use threadlocker.

Chain Tensioning

  • Location: Chain tensioner mechanism
  • Fasteners: 2x M6x20 hex head cap screws
  • Torque: 10 Nm
  • Notes: Allows chain tension adjustment. Check weekly.

Throttle Pedal Hardware

Pedal Mount

  • Location: Throttle pedal to floor plate
  • Fasteners: 2x M5x12 hex head cap screws
  • Torque: 6 Nm
  • Notes: Ensure pedal is level and secure

Assembly Instructions

Installation Order

  1. Motor mount bolts: Install motor to chassis first
  2. Front sprocket: Attach custom sprocket to motor shaft
  3. Rear sprocket: Mount to axle (see chassis fasteners)
  4. Chain: Install and tension using tensioner hardware
  5. Throttle pedal: Mount to accessible floor location

Torque Sequence

  • Always torque in cross pattern for multi-bolt connections
  • Use threadlocker (blue, medium strength) on all critical bolts
  • Re-check torque after first operation session

Maintenance Schedule

Component Check Frequency Action
Motor mount bolts Weekly Visual inspection, retorque if loose
Sprocket bolts Bi-weekly Check for looseness, clean threads
Chain tensioner Weekly Adjust tension, lubricate threads
Throttle mount Monthly Check for wear, ensure secure

Procurement

  • McMaster-Carr: High-quality metric fasteners
  • Bossard: Professional fastener distributor
  • Local hardware: Basic bolts and nuts

Standard Materials

  • Steel, zinc plated: Standard for most applications
  • Stainless steel: For exposed locations (optional upgrade)
  • Threadlocker: Loctite 243 (blue, medium strength)

Total Fastener Cost

  • Estimated cost: €8.50 for complete powertrain fastener kit
  • Recommended: Purchase 25% extra for spares and maintenance
